Blackfencer

Tournament Feder

$107

This design of federschwert (feather sword or training sword) from Blackfencer features a simple design with a more classic schilt as seen in historical manuscripts. It features a longer blade (similar to the other XL models) as well as no fuller and a new shape of schilt. It's still got that durable cord wrap you know and love and beautiful and durable guard and pommel. It handles very similarly to the other long synthetic feders available from Blackfencer, just with a new look!

Specs:
~2 lb 14 oz
39.5” blade length
12” handle length
1.75 - 1” blade width
52.5” overall length

This is a great feder for regular sparring. Handles great, the hilt is rock solid and there is 0 loose fittings after a year of weekly sparring. The handle wrap is like the day I bought it after a year. The blade is a bit chewed up after countless wacks apon many fencing masks, but is still in good functioning order.

The bad: on one particularly hot day the feder took a set to one side, and it has never been the same. No amount of heat or clamping to straight boards will return this thing to its formal glory. For this reason, I highly recommend getting the feder with the deep fuller by socal swords instead. I have fenced extensively with the "synthetic feder" and i find it to be the superior option compared to this one. It is stronger in the bind, stiffer in the thrust (just a little, still safe), slightly shorter but also doesn't suffer from the sagging issue. It features the same hilt construction with is great.
For 100 bucks-ish, its a great buy. Recommended, but not as good as the regular "synthetic feder" by socal.

Also, I've fenced with synthetic swords made by purpleheart and i will say without a doubt the socal swords feders are significantly better.

The crossguard is very square. This looks nice but will chew up other synthetic swords because its too sharp an angle. I rounded mine and my clubs crossguards with a grinder and polished it so it doesn't damage our blades. Simple enough and there are metalworkers everywhere, but I highly recommend it! This is also and issue with socals other models.

Pros: nice price. Looks similar to a feder. VERY safe. Can hit hard just like any feder if your edge alignment is good! Handles well. Rock solid construction. Blade can take a serious beating

Cons: floppy. Edge alignment needs to be spot on. Suceptible to damage from a hot day. Crossguard damages other blades without modification.

Pretty good 👍

I love it! Its really well built. It's a bit heavy with cuts, but great in the bind and with thrusts.
